2012 to 2017, a new Great Explorers coin will be released each year until
Canada’s 2017 Sesquicentennial.
This first coin in a new Royal Canadian Mint series depicts Norse explorers, with their sailing vessel anchored offshore, landing for the first time on the shores of the New World. Accurately drawn from Vikings characteristics of that time, the ship, clothes, weapons, and utilities reflect historical characteristics. Contemporary accounts suggest that the first European to spot the shores of the New World was a Norse merchant in the late tenth century. In 1960, archaeologists unearthed a small Viking camp in Newfoundland’s L’Anse aux Meadows, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This fine gold coin is encapsulated and presented in a maroon flock-lined clamshell case, protected by a black sleeve and accompanied by a serialized certificate of authenticity (COA). The COA provides proof of ownership for this low mintage coin and is evidence that this coin has been individually inspected by the Royal Canadian Mint’s resident quality assurance specialists.

Vikings is the first 99.99% pure gold coin in the Great Explorers series. With
